Pairc Deer Raider Memorial

After visiting the furthest point north (Point Ness), I decided to visit the southern-most point of the Isles of Harris and Lewis. Although they are considered to be two islands, they are joined and completely accessible to each other.
Along the way, I passed this fascinating memorial honoring the Pairc Deer Raiders of 1887. They had petitioned a proprietrix of Lewis for permission to return to their ancestral lands from which they had been evicted. This memorial honors the fact that they took matters into their own hands when their impoverished pleas continued to fall on deaf ears.

  1. Intriguing monument. I presume, from the photo, that the dome is open at top. It's almost like the sole purpose of building is to house the stairway. Hmmm.

  2. There are 3 entrances, and it seems like there were 3 people that were found not quilty of charges. So, it seems like as you climb the spiral staircase and emerge to view the surrounding landscape, you are joining with these ancients to claim the land as your own with them. It's pretty cool.
