Eilean Aigas

When we returned to the front of the mansion, we met one of the groundsmen. Andy bid me farewell in a way that let me know that it was time to go. Only when I was out of view did I dare to snap a photo of the mansion that was mostly obscured by trees. But, I found it--Eilean Aigas!

  1. Awesome story Steve. Sounds like you spent the better part of the day on the quest, but what a great adventure. Would have loved to experienced that with you. So where is this actually? Is it only an island due to the split "ox-bow" in a river? Or is it on one of the isles detached from the mainland, or both. Is it an old tune predating the manse? Wonder whose/what money is behind all the aloofness? Submit employment application, Estate's Bard.

  2. Google this place--Eilean Aigas. Then click on the button that provides google earth. It is a large island in the middle of the Beauly River. The river flows around it on both sides. Because of the tree coverage, it is hard to detect that it is an island. The owners are, I think, from the Fraser family...but it could have passed to others. From what I recall, the publication date is after the time of Bonnie Prince Charlie. I think of it as lamenting the aftermath that Frasers living nearby suffered after the Battle of Culloden, but also hinting at the beaucolic beauty of the area. It is a substantial chunk of land and has sufficient rise and shape to not seem to be formed from that ox-bowing effect.
