Athens of the North

Last Fall at the Harper’s Ferry Getaway Weekend, Dominique Dodge taught us the tune Bonaparte’s Retreat. Today we hiked to the top of Carlton Hill and saw these Greek temple columns that make some call this “Athens of the North”. This monument is called Nelson’s column, and was built in tribute to the successful fight against Bonaparte. Since they ran out of funds, the monument was never officially finished. It is locally referred to as "Edinburgh’s Disgrace".
