Rigs

On the way down from Arthur’s Seat, I asked Ed about the curious look of the green at the fancy golf course below us. My suspicions were confirmed when Ed said they were the remnants of the historic planting method of using “rigs” or ridges of soil with water flowing between them.

  1. I was just thinking that, tomorrow, you'll be heading into parts of Scotland that were joined with our Appalachian Mountains way back when. (In fact, I believe there is a movement to create an International Appalachian Trail that continues the USA one over to the British Isles.)

Anyway, if you go hiking around there, let me know if it seems at all like hiking here, around Pyramid Mountain. It should be very gneiss (ha ha).

  2. It's a cool thought to think that this same mountain chain is on opposite sides of the ocean...and that during the clearances people migrated to the Appalachians.

  3. Woah! Hadn't thought about that. No wonder the scots thought it looked like home when they got to the Appalachians.

  4. And in the newspaper here yesterday, in was announced that parts of the Highlands in Scotland had been added to the Appalachian Trail. Interesting how these coincidences keep popping up.
