Our group toured the Scottish Mining Museum in Newtongrange. After learning about the closing of all coal mines in Scotland in the early ’80 during the regime of Margaret Thatcher, Brian McNeill and Ed Miller sang “The Prince of Darkness”. Brian’s lyrics were given music by Ed in a song that personalizes the loss of a way of life for generations of people. Learning about the coal mining history here in Scotland brought to mind the struggles of coal miners in Eastern Kentucky.
