Authur's Seat

Today, our tour bus retrieved people from the airport and from various hotels in the heart of Edinburgh. While we drove through the maze of streets and turn-abouts, we glimpsed some famous sites like Edinburgh Castle, the Sir Walter Scott Memorial, and Burger King. We have been warned that anyone caught eating at an American fast-food establishment will be flogged. We visited a good pub instead.

Edinburgh rests on dormant volcanoes. Edinburgh Castle sits atop the core of a once active volcano at one end of the old city. At the other end, a long gentle slope was formed from volcanic material that was carved by glaciers during the ice age. This gentle slope leads to Arthurs seat. On May Day many people hike to the top of Arthur’s Seat to watch the sunrise and wash their faces in the morning dew. This ritual continues from before the pre-Christian era.
